This prosciutto-wrapped cod with lemon caper spinach couldn’t be easier to make!
I’m always drawn to recipes that are simple, yet impressive. This prosciutto-wrapped cod recipe is definitely that. Who says elegant dinners need to take all day? Seriously, no one has time for that.
This delicious meal only takes 20 minutes to make. Total. It truly couldn’t be easier. And, of course, the flavors in this dish are just amazing.
Prosciutto, capers, lemon, and light, buttery cod fillets. So. Good.
The perfect crispy prosciutto – gotta use a skillet!
One of my favorite things about this recipe is how crispy the prosciutto gets when you cook it in a skillet. I’ve actually tried this same recipe in the oven and it just does not compare.
In a skillet you get a nice crispy exterior and a light, flaky interior. Plus, you can cook the spinach right in the same pan after the fish is done. I just love one pan meals.
This healthy cod recipe is sure to be your new favorite!
Not only is this recipe super easy and delicious, it is also really healthy! It’s paleo, low carb, keto, Whole30, gluten free, and dairy free. If you need extra carbs, this meal would be great with some black rice or quinoa.

Prosciutto-Wrapped Cod with Lemon Caper Spinach
- Gluten-Free
- Dairy-Free
- Paleo
- Low Carb
- Keto
- Whole30
- Low Calorie
- Pescatarian
Ingredients
- 12-14 oz 340-400g cod fillets
- Sea salt & pepper
- 1.5 oz ~45g prosciutto de parma
- 2 Tbsp 28g grass-fed butter, ghee, or avocado oil
- 1 clove garlic minced
- 4 cups ~180g baby spinach
- 2 Tbsp capers
- 1 tsp fresh lemon juice
- Zest of 1 lemon
Instructions
- Pat fillets completely dry with paper towels and allow to come to room temperature.
- Once they are at room temperature (usually about 30 minutes), pat them dry again and sprinkle with a little salt and pepper. Not too much salt here because the prosciutto is salty.
- Wrap the fillets with prosciutto. You want to wrap them tightly but gently so that you do not tear the prosciutto. If your prociutto is in strips rather than sheets, just overlap the strips to create a sheet and then wrap around the fillets. I like to lay the prosciutto out on a flat surface, place the fillet on top, then roll the fillet to wrap it.
- Melt butter or ghee in a cast iron skillet or other nonstick pan over medium heat.
- Once the butter is hot, add the fillets and cook for 5 minutes per side or until the fish flakes easily with a fork. Total cooking time of 10 minutes. Flip carefully with a flexible spatula. Cooking time is for 1" fillets. Adjust cooking time based on the thickness of your fillets. When in doubt, use a thermometer and cook until the internal temperature reaches 140ºF/60ºC.
- Remove the fillets to a cooling rack. This prevents the bottoms from getting soggy.
- With the burner still on medium, add garlic to the pan and stir for about 30 seconds. Add spinach, capers, and lemon juice. Stir and cook for about 1-2 minutes. Just until the spinach has wilted.
- Move the spinach to plates using tongs. Top with the fish and sprinkle with lemon zest.
- Serve immediately and enjoy!

This was so easy and delicious! Some didn’t care for the capers but you can always leave those off and it would still be yummy. I only added some pepper to season otherwise it was perfectly seasoned with the prosciutto… even the spinach! Will definitely mail again
Hi, Brandie! I’m so glad you loved the recipe! Thank you SO much for taking the time to leave me a review! 🙂
This was ah-maze-ing!!! Came together so quickly once my fish was ready to wrap (had use frozen cod in landlocked MT), and was absolutely delicious! I added just a dash of red pepper flakes to the spinach and drizzled extra lemon juice on the final plating. Would definitely make again! Thank you!
Hi, Jen! Thank you so much for taking the time to leave a review! I really appreciate it! So glad you loved the recipe! 🙂
I’m not going to lie, this was amazing! It combined all of my favorites. Prosciutto, spinach, capers and a meaty white fish. The spinach was a bit salty (I didn’t drain my capers, so that’s my fault). I added a plain gnocchi to this meal for my non keto family. Quick. Easy. Delicious!
Hi, Meg! I’m so glad you enjoyed the recipe! Thanks so much for the amazing review! Make sure to check out my Creamy Lemon Garlic Baked Cod recipe if you love cod! So good!
Home run! Easy to make and super tasty!
Hi, Pam! So glad you liked it!
The prosciutto made the cod too salty. I did not season the cod with salt first, just pepper. The cod cooked really well just hard to eat with overpowering saltiness.
The spinach was the real winner from this recipe. Adding capers was a great way to change up the flavor.
Hi, Sarah! I’m so sorry the fish was too salty for you. Perhaps next time you may want to just season with pepper prior to cooking or find a different brand of prosciutto. I have found that some brands are saltier than others. If you are buying in the deli they will let you try some before purchasing! I’m glad you enjoyed the spinach! ☺️
This is so yummy and so easy. I’ve added to my healthy dinner night rotation and even the hubs loves it ❤️ I love the crispy prosciutto and the flavors are perfect together. Thanks for a delightful recipe
Hi, Cheyenne! So glad you enjoyed the recipe! 😃
Do you think I could BBQ it on the treager grill.
Hi, Michelle! I haven’t tried it but I think you could. I would recommend using a cast iron skillet inside the grill or a cast iron grill insert to cook it on. I suspect that if you grilled right on the metal grill grates that the prosciutto might fall off because it is so thin and delicate. Let me know if you try it! I’d love to hear how it turns out.
I made this recipe tonight and it was fabulous!
Hi, Cynthia! So glad to hear that you enjoyed the recipe! ☺️
Mine did not turn out right, tasted weird 🙁 took 2 bites, and rest when in the garbage, bummed.
Oh wow, I’m so sorry that yours didn’t turn out right! What kind of cod did you use? I hope that your dissatisfaction with this particular recipe does not deter you from utilizing my recipes in the future. If you are a fan of cod, perhaps you would like my One Pan Roasted Mediterranean Cod recipe instead!
We had this for dinner tonight and it was super quick and delicious! I didn’t have time to zest a lemon, but it still came out great. My one and three year old weren’t sure about the prosciutto and capers, but ate everything else.
Hi Kathryn! That’s how I spell my full name too! 😃 So glad y’all enjoyed the recipe!
Love this!!! It is in our regular dinner rotation!
Hi Anne! So glad to hear that you love the recipe! 😀
As a recent bariatric surgery patient, I have been looking for recipes high in protein and low in carbs and this fit the bill. And it was absolutely delicious!!! Thank you so much! I’m sharing a link to it on my bariatric recipe Facebook page.
Hi Luella! So glad you enjoyed the recipe and that it worked for your dietary needs! I love this one too! I hope the other members of your Facebook group like it too 🙂
This recipe was sooooo good! I made just a small adjustment. I sprinkled some red pepper flakes on the cod and I added some diced tomatoes to the spinach. I would have never thought up this recipe in my own. Great job! 🙂
I’m so glad you enjoyed the recipe! Yum, those sound like great additions! 🙂
This looks great, but I’m not a fan of fish. Would it work with chicken or shrimp?
Hi, Kim! Thanks for your comment! Yes, absolutely. For chicken you will need a longer cook time, so you will probably want to make it in the oven instead so you don’t burn the prosciutto. For shrimp you can still use a skillet on the stovetop. You will likely need to reduce the cook time to 1-2 mins per side on high though. Or you could cook the shrimp on a broiling pan and broil for a few minutes per side instead 🙂
How would this work with salmon that still has the skin on it? I hate skinning fish, and usually just cook the fish with the skin and peel it after cooking.
Hi, Faith! Yes, it would work with salmon with the skin. If you substitute with salmon (skin on or off) you may need to adjust the cooking time 🙂
This was an delicious, healthy and simple dish! Thank you for a wonderful recipe!
Hi, Danielle! So glad you liked it! You’re welcome 🙂
Great stuff thanks! Went down a treat and looked the part.

You’re welcome! So glad you enjoyed the recipe 🙂
I have a lot of collard greens in my fridge, could I use collards instead of spinach? thanks!
Hi, Jessica! Sorry for the late response! Yes, you can! They will probably need a little more cook time though. Just a couple more minutes I would think.
I made this for my husband, who can be fussy!
He loved it and said ” You can make this again”
So we’re having company for dinner, quess what I’m making 💓
Hi, Mary! So glad y’all enjoyed the recipe!! Thanks for the great review 🙂
Sounds very delicious. Would like to try it asap. I have everything on hand, except for the fresh spinach, but have plenty of frozen in the freezer. Could I use that??
Thanx, Eva
Hi, Eva! So sorry for the late response. I had a baby in December and took some unexpected time off. Yes, you can use frozen spinach if that’s all you have on hand. Just thaw and drain before adding to the recipe. It will not be quite as fresh and tasty, but in a pinch it will still work!
Oh my goodness this was yummy. Followed exactly and could have licked the plate clean. Husband looked at me and said oh do this again.
Hi, Amelia! Wow, I’m so glad you liked the recipe so much! Thanks for the stellar review! 🙂
Would Pollock work for this?
I think so! Just adjust the cook time based on the thickness of your fillets 🙂
This was Delicious!! I made it for my wife tonight and we loved. I also love how for recipe prepared the spinach and am planning to use this again and again!
Hi, George! Thanks! So glad y’all enjoyed the recipe! 🙂
Could you sub for bacon?
Hi, Danielle! I don’t think the bacon would cook all the way through with the short cooking time. And if you baked for longer then the fish would be overcooked 😕
AH-MAZING!! Paired with a Kim Crawford Sauvignon Blanc!!! SOOOOOO GOOD!! THANK YOU!!!
Hi, Kristi! So happy you enjoyed the recipe! Oooo yum sounds like a great pairing 😍
This recipe is a winner! I made this recipe for dinner and everyone thought it was delicious! It was so easy to prepare and plated beautifully. I did omit the salt due to the prosciutto, capers and lemon providing plenty of flavor.
That is so great to hear! So glad you enjoyed it!! ☺️
This recipe is a winner! Gives an elegant presentation for a special dinner part with some creative dish garnish or just as a hreat weekday dinner. Just can’t lose when paired with a chilled Pinot Grigio. Bon apetite!
Hi, Jerry! Thanks so much! So glad you enjoyed it! Mmmm yes I bet it would be great with a nice chilled pinot grigio 😀
This looks so good. I want to make it for my mother but she can’t eat spinach, do you think beet tops or chard could work instead ?
Thanks
Hi, Nancey! Sure! I think most kinds of mildly-flavored greens would work well with this! You could even do asparagus instead 😊
Another question, can I use other types of fish? What do you suggest? Thank you
Yes! In fact, I am personally not a huge fan of cod. Not enough flavor and a weird texture to me. I just make recipes with it because others love it so much! I prefer to use haddock, sea bass, mahi-mahi, or snapper. Just depends on where you live and what you can find. Just make sure to adjust the cooking temp based on the thickness of the fillets 🙂
Just started doing Paleo. This was delicious!! My husband and I loved it!!!
Hi, Andrea! I’m so glad that you and your husband enjoyed the recipe!! Thanks so much for your feedback! 😊
